Who it fits
Good fit for
You should consider these headphones if you prioritize high-fidelity audio via wireless connection. The support for LDAC and aptX Lossless makes them suitable for listeners with Hi-Res audio sources. The 80-hour battery life is ideal for frequent travelers or long listening sessions. The planar magnetic drivers appeal to audiophiles seeking detailed sound reproduction. The included carry case and foldable design add convenience for portability.
Who should skip it
You might want to look elsewhere if you prefer open-back headphones for a natural soundstage. The closed-back design here isolates sound, which may not suit everyone. If you need a wired-only solution, the wireless focus might be unnecessary, though an AUX cable is included. Users who do not have a smartphone or device supporting Snapdragon Sound codecs may not access all features. The app-based EQ control requires a smartphone, which could be a drawback for some.
Verdict: The Edifier STAX Spirit S5 offers robust wireless audio capabilities with planar magnetic drivers and long battery life. It is a strong option for listeners who value high-resolution wireless sound and convenience.
Key specs explained for the S5
Planar Magnetic Driver with EqualMass diaphragm
This driver type uses a thin diaphragm suspended in a magnetic field. The EqualMass structure ensures uniform force across the surface. You get low distortion and fast response times. This setup delivers accurate sound reproduction. It suits listeners who prioritize clarity and detail in their music. Compare this with standard dynamic drivers for a different sound profile.
Bluetooth V5.4 with aptX Adaptive
Bluetooth 5.4 provides a stable and fast connection. You can pair with two devices simultaneously. The aptX Adaptive codec adjusts bitrate for high-quality audio or low latency. This ensures minimal delay for video and gaming. You benefit from consistent performance. Check other headphones for older Bluetooth versions or lack of adaptive codecs.
Support for LDAC and LHDC
These codecs enable Hi-Res Audio Wireless transmission. You receive more data than standard Bluetooth, offering greater detail and clarity. This supports up to 24-bit/96kHz audio files. Audiophiles will appreciate the enhanced fidelity. Compare this with standard SBC or AAC codecs for a noticeable difference in sound richness.
80 hours of battery life
You get extended playback time on a single charge. A quick 10-minute charge provides 11 hours of listening. This reduces the need for frequent charging. You can travel or work for days without power concerns. Compare this with competitors that offer shorter battery durations for better convenience.
Weight of 12.2 ounces
This weight indicates a substantial build for over-ear headphones. You may feel the load during long sessions. The ergonomic design and lambskin earpads help distribute pressure. Adjust the headband for a secure fit. Compare this with lighter models if you prefer minimal weight for portable use.
Design and build overview
The Edifier STAX Spirit S5 Planar Magnetic Headphones come in a Space Black finish. According to the listing, the build includes a foldable structure and adjustable headbands. This layout prioritizes portability, allowing you to store them easily in the included carry case for travel. The genuine lambskin earpads are designed for long-term comfort, which matters when you wear them for extended sessions.
Weight is listed at 12.2 ounces. This mass is typical for over-ear models with planar magnetic drivers. You should expect a secure fit that stays in place during movement. The closed-back design helps contain sound, creating a private listening environment. This isolation reduces external noise, letting you focus on the audio without raising the volume excessively.
Connectivity options include Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C, and an AUX cable. These physical and wireless links ensure you can connect to various devices. The inclusion of wired options means you are not dependent on battery life for basic use. The ergonomic design supports daily commuting or stationary listening. You get a versatile tool that adapts to your connection needs without compromising on structural integrity.
Setup and everyday use
Setting up the Edifier STAX Spirit S5 Planar Magnetic Headphones is straightforward if you use a compatible Android device. The listing notes support for Google Fast Pair, which allows quick pairing under Bluetooth mode. For other devices, you connect via Bluetooth V5.4 or use the included USB-C and AUX cables. This versatility ensures you can link the headphones to various audio sources without issue. The Bluetooth 5.4 standard provides stable transmission and supports simultaneous connection to two devices, letting you switch between a phone and a laptop easily.
For daily listening, the headphones offer up to 80 hours of continuous playback on a single charge. If you need more power quickly, a 10-minute charge provides 11 hours of use. The ergonomic design features genuine lambskin earpads and an adjustable headband, which the listing says ensures comfort during long sessions. You can also use the Edifier ConneX App to adjust equalizer settings. The app lets you choose from three preset modes or create custom EQ profiles to match your preferences.
Call quality relies on dual microphones and Qualcomm cVc technology to deliver clear voice transmission. The closed-back design helps maintain a private listening environment by isolating external noise. When using aptX Adaptive, the headphones maintain high-resolution audio with minimal latency, specified at 89 ms end-to-end. This makes them suitable for both music and video. The foldable structure and included carry case make transport convenient for travel.
Before You Buy The S5
You should verify your source devices support the codecs you need, such as LDAC or aptX Adaptive, to unlock high-resolution audio. The listing confirms Bluetooth 5.4 for stable connections, but not all phones handle every codec equally. For wired listening, you will need a USB-C or AUX cable, which are not included. Keep the genuine lambskin earpads clean to maintain comfort during those long 80-hour sessions. This model sits among other premium wireless options in Headphones & Earbuds, distinguished by its planar magnetic drivers. While many competitors use dynamic drivers, the S5’s EqualMass diaphragm offers a different sound profile. You might also consider the Edifier ConneX app for EQ tweaks, though it requires a smartphone. Ensure your case is available for travel, as the foldable design is built for portability. Check your device compatibility before purchasing to ensure the Snapdragon Sound features work as advertised.
