How Each Alternative Compares
ASUS ROG Kithara Open-Back Headphones
The ASUS ROG Kithara shares the open-back planar magnetic driver design found in the HIFIMAN Edition XS. It weighs 11.2 ounces, making it lighter than the 14.3-ounce Edition XS. This model includes a built-in microphone, a feature the Edition XS lacks. It is rated for gaming, whereas the Edition XS targets studio use. You get similar acoustic transparency and wide soundstage performance. The Kithara suits gamers who need clear communication without sacrificing audio fidelity. Choose this if you prioritize a lighter build and integrated mic for PC or console sessions over pure studio monitoring.
Philips Over-Ear Open-Back Studio Headphones
The Philips SHP9500 offers an open-back design similar to the Edition XS but uses dynamic drivers instead of planar magnetic ones. It weighs 1.19 pounds, which is heavier than the 14.3-ounce Edition XS. The Philips model features a detachable cable, enhancing long-term durability. It provides a spacious soundstage ideal for home listening. You give up the ultra-thin diaphragm speed and stealth magnet clarity of the HIFIMAN. This option fits listeners who want a reliable, comfortable headphone for casual studio work or home use. It is a practical choice if you prioritize cable replaceability and broad comfort over high-resolution planar detail.
Fosi Audio 97mm Open-Back Planar Headphones
The Fosi Audio i5 features a 97mm planar magnetic driver, which is significantly larger than the typical drivers in the Edition XS. It is an open-back, wired model designed for studio precision. The Fosi Audio lacks the specific stealth magnet technology and NEO supernano diaphragm found in the HIFIMAN. You receive a different tonal character driven by the larger diaphragm surface area. This headphone suits listeners who want massive driver size for detailed acoustic resolution. It is a strong alternative if you prioritize raw driver dimensions and wired fidelity over the specific acoustically invisible magnet design of the Edition XS.
HIFIMAN Arya Unveiled Open-Back Planar Headphones
The HIFIMAN Arya Unveiled is also an open-back planar magnetic headphone, sharing the same brand DNA as the Edition XS. It weighs 14.6 ounces, slightly heavier than the 14.3-ounce Edition XS. The Arya Unveiled features a grill-free design, offering direct driver exposure. This differs from the Edition XS, which uses stealth magnets behind a grille. You gain driver purity and transparency but accept a marginally higher weight. This model is ideal for listeners who want to hear the diaphragm directly without grille interference. Choose this if you value acoustic purity and are comfortable with the slight weight increase for enhanced planar performance.
FiiO FT1 Pro Open-Back Planar Headphones
The FiiO FT1 Pro uses a planar magnetic driver with a coated diaphragm, differing from the NEO supernano diaphragm in the Edition XS. It weighs 2.29 pounds, making it substantially heavier than the 14.3-ounce Edition XS. The FiiO model is blue, offering a distinct color option compared to the black Edition XS. It targets studio monitoring and high-resolution home listening. You trade the lightweight comfort of the HIFIMAN for a robust build and coated diaphragm detail. This headphone suits listeners who prioritize detailed soundstage resolution and are willing to manage the higher weight for precise audio fidelity in a stationary setting.
HIFIMAN Ananda Planar Magnetic Headphones
The HIFIMAN Ananda shares the open-back planar magnetic design and stealth magnet technology of the Edition XS. It weighs 14.1 ounces, slightly lighter than the 14.3-ounce Edition XS. The Ananda features a thin diaphragm similar to the Edition XS for fast response. It is designed for detail-oriented home listening. You get comparable acoustic transparency and sound clarity. The Ananda is a suitable alternative if you want a similar HIFIMAN planar experience with a marginally lighter build. Choose this if you prioritize sound clarity and stealth magnet performance over the specific stealth magnet and diaphragm combination of the Edition XS.
