Sony XM5 vs CH730N Specs
battery life
The Sony WH-CH730N offers significantly longer playback time. It provides up to 50 hours of listening with noise cancellation active. If you turn off noise cancellation, that number jumps to 75 hours. The Sony WH-1000XM5 Renewed provides up to 30 hours of battery life. This is still sufficient for long trips, but the CH730N lasts nearly twice as long with noise cancellation on. The CH730N also includes a quick charge feature that yields one hour of playback from just three minutes of charging. The XM5 data does not list a quick charge option. For users who travel frequently or forget to charge often, the CH730N is the clear winner.
noise cancellation type
Both headphones feature noise cancellation, but the technology differs. The Sony WH-CH730N uses Dual Noise Sensor technology with microphones in each earcup to reduce outside noise. It also includes an Ambient Sound Mode with 20 adjustable levels and Voice Passthrough. This allows you to hear your surroundings when needed. The Sony WH-1000XM5 Renewed features general noise cancellation but highlights Adaptive Sound Control. This feature automatically adjusts settings based on your environment and activity. It also includes Speak-to-Chat to pause music during conversations. The XM5 data does not mention adjustable ambient sound levels. The CH730N offers more manual control over ambient hearing.
audio features
Audio capabilities show distinct differences between the two models. The Sony WH-1000XM5 Renewed is engineered for High-Resolution Audio quality. This suggests a higher fidelity standard for music playback. The Sony WH-CH730N focuses on balanced audio with DSEE technology to restore detail in compressed music. It also supports 360 Reality Audio for an immersive experience. The XM5 does not list 360 Reality Audio support. The CH730N does not explicitly claim High-Resolution Audio certification. If you prioritize lossless or high-res file playback, the XM5 has the edge. For immersive spatial audio and compressed music enhancement, the CH730N is better.
weight and comfort
Physical comfort varies due to weight differences. The Sony WH-CH730N weighs 7.3 ounces. It features a slim design with soft ear cushions for all-day wear. The CH730N is better for lightweight comfort.
connectivity
Connectivity options differ slightly between the two. Both support Bluetooth wireless connections. The Sony WH-CH730N explicitly lists LE Audio support. This is a newer standard that can improve efficiency and quality. The Sony WH-1000XM5 Renewed highlights multipoint pairing, allowing connection to two devices simultaneously. It also mentions Fast Pair and Swift Pair for easy device linking. The CH730N data does not explicitly confirm multipoint pairing, though it mentions the Sony | Sound Connect App for customization.
